Editing Wiki Templates Edit

Changes to existing templates, especially complicated alterations to widely-used templates, should be tested in a template sandbox before being added to the main version. This is to avoid potentially breaking many pages should there be unintended effects or errors in the changes.

Templates may be copied into a sandbox page where the changes may be safely made. The experimental version may then be tested on a dedicated testcases page or a page in the user's User Space. Tests should include various use cases and parameter inputs.

Sandbox and testcase pages may be created using the links in the template documentation's footer, or by adding "/sandbox" or "/testcases" to the end of the main template URL and adding the {{Sandbox}} or {{Testcases}} notice to the new page. Existing sandboxes and testcases can be found in the Template Sandboxes and Testcases category.
