How to Get
|•||On Play:||"This is as far as you'll go!"|
Sigvard, the Last Bastion serves as a powerful tempo play should its conditions be met. Played around correctly, it can help secure the board against opponents that have no immediate answer to it.
The card has an original cost of 11, which is prohibitely high for a 4/5 body with Lifesteal. The card's peculiarity resides in its cost reduction: differently from cards like Sindok, Rage Incarnate and Pyre Elemental, Sigvard, the Last Bastion reduces its cost by 3 for each type of cards in your Void (Unit, Spell, Attachment), up to a 9 power reduction resulting in a 2 cost 4/5 Lifesteal Paladin. It is important to note that differently from the already mentioned cards, the cost reduction for Sigvard, the Last Bastion is permanent. From one side, it makes playing him back with cards like Dark Return easier. From the other, it is not possible to properly combo him with Unstable Form (or worst, it makes it vulnerable to spells like Banish).
The major drawbacks of this card are 2. First of all, while a 4/5 Lifesteal in the early game can be relevant, it has no immediate impact like other cards such as Valkyrie Enforcer, which makes him suffer greatly against removal. Secondly, it needs to fulfill all 3 of his cost reduction marks to be considered a meaningful play, since with only 2 marks he's just a balanced 5 cost unit. This however also means that the player must have all 3 card types in his early hands and that they have to end up in his Void so that it can be played properly, which makes it reliant on having the right "combo pieces" in hand.
Sigvard, the Last Bastion needs a deck that relies on low cost units, spells and weapons to reduce its cost as soon as possible. Because between the 3 the latter can be the most restraining, the card works well in Paladin themed decks: Anointer of the Faithful provides both low cost units (through Bond) and weapons (through her effect); Oathbreaker will buff all units with lifesteal when attacking; as already said, Dark Return can fetch Sigvard, the Last Bastion from the Void with its cost reduction unchanged.
