Strategy[edit | edit source]
By the time the expansion hit, Teacher of Humility confirmed itself as one of the strongest legendaries in the game, being on par with Sandstorm Titan in terms of play rate and popularity. Because of its game-changing effect, most competitive decks shaped themselves just to be able to counter it.
The card has 2 characteristics that make it dreaded. First of all, it's a 3/3 unit for 2, which gives it a strong early board presence. Unlike Argenport Instigator, however, she doesn't compensate her stats with an effect that can backfire, making it a better choice in terms of overall strength. The second, most important, characteristic is her Infiltrate: the hit player will gain a curse that increases the cost of any additional drawn cards by 2; at the same time, both players will draw a card, which gives the player controlling Teacher of Humility a huge tempo advantage.
A 2 cost increase on additional draw can easily cripple most decks outside of heavy aggro ones, especially for one reason: Disciplinary Weights affects any card draw outside of the one occuring at the start of your turn. Cards drawn from your Void (through cards like Dark Return) will still receive the cost increase, as well as any card fetched from the Market. Because of this, most midrange/control/combo decks can end tremendously crippled if they allow Teacher of Humility to activate its effect. However, even without its effect she can still cover the board against aggro because of its stats, making the card a good choice for most scenarios.
In terms of downsides, Teacher of Humilty has a influence requirement, which makes it difficult to play unless in a mono- deck (or a 2 influence deck that goes heavy on ). Most importantly, her effect can be used against the player who played it with cards like Madness and Betray the Cause. For how much it regards Disciplinary Weights, being an Attachment it is removable through cards like Ruin, Vision of Austerity and Disjunction, although it will still at least make both players draw a card when placed, with one of them still receiving the cost increase. The safest way to block the inflitrate is through Aegis, with Eilyn's Favor being a good solution. Overall, the card offers mostly benefits.
Cards that synergize with Teacher of Humilty are those that can grant her some sort of evasion to trigger its effect: either by giving it Flying (Levitate), Unblockable (Ghostform) or Overwhelm (Rampage). Haunting Scream can also work for hitting the opponent with multiple Disciplinary Weights. For how much it regards deckbuilding, the card's nature allows it to fit in almost every deck with no backfire, making it a must-have for any player interested in the faction.
